Young construction trainees will help develop the £20 million Lincoln project One the Brayford in a bid to combat Lincolnshire’s skills shortage.

The three trainees, from Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, are part of contractor Lindum’s team, which is carrying out the construction work on Brayford Wharf.

The project will see 89 luxury apartments and three new restaurants constructed on the city’s waterfront.

Joe Balderson, 23, from Scunthorpe, has joined the development team as a trainee quantity surveyor, Alex Hackett, 25, from Boston has joined as a technical trainee and Tom Asquith, 19, from Sutton-on-Trent, is an apprentice groundwork.

Both the trainees and apprentice combine on-the-job training, working alongside experienced colleagues who provide guidance and support throughout, with part time study towards a recognised qualification.

Dominik Jackson, director at developer Jackson & Jackson Developments, said: “The skills shortage within the construction industry continues to be its biggest threat.

“Therefore it’s so important that construction sites offer a safe and supportive environment for young people who want a career in construction to learn.

“Organisations like Lindum Group, who dedicate time and resource to developing the next generation, help to fill the skills gap by supporting young people into what can be a very rewarding and dynamic career.”

Lincoln-based Lindum Group recruit new trainees and apprentices each year and currently has 40 young people learning a skilled trade or profession through these training programs.

Shook Liu, HR manager at Lindum Group, said: “The future of the UK construction industry is dependent on the availability of highly skilled trade and professional people and as a company which has been in the business now for 60 years, we recognise the need to invest in the training and development of the next generation to help ensure we are around for the next 60 years.

“Our recruitment process aims to match apprentices and trainees to the right profession and throughout the training programs they have the benefit of working with several divisions, gaining experience on a broad range of projects. One The Brayford is a high profile and versatile scheme ideal for our trainees.”
