Grimsby Co-op bank to close after customers move online

This story is over

The Grimsby branch of the Co-operative bank will close in June, a move the company is putting down to customers’ migration to online services.

The branch on St Mary’s Street will close its doors on June 20.

An ongoing review will determine whether staff currently located at the branch can be redistributed across the company.

It’s not yet known if any members of staff will face redundancy.

No other Lincolnshire branches are set to cease operation in the latest role of branch closures.

Heather Lauder, Director of Retail and Business Banking at Co-operative Bank, said changes “reflect the changing way that our customers choose to bank, as they increasingly undertake more of their transactions online or via contactless payments.

“The fall in the number of transactions made in the branches means it is simply no longer sustainable to keep them open.”

The company has said it will be writing to all this affected by the closure and have sought to “minimise the impact”.

Co-operative Bank reported its fifth consecutive year of losses earlier this month (a loss of £477 million), and warned of a number of branch closures and job losses.

It also indicated that it would seek £750 million of new capital if it could not find a buyer.

Some 10 branches have been outlined for closure in total across the UK, bringing the total number of Co-operative bank branches to 95.
