Plans for the refurbishment of public realm along Sincil Street and the creation of a new public square at The Cornhill have been approved by the City of Lincoln Council.
Submitted by Steve Galjaard on behalf of Lincoln Corn Exchange and Markets (1991) Ltd and Lincolnshire Co-op, the 2,552m2 area will be fully refurbished.
Both the public realm along Sincil Street and Cornhill Pavements will undergo significant transformation in terms of layout, surfacing, seating and lighting.
According to applicants, the public realm for Cornhill Pavements and Sincil Street will create a ‘revitalised and distinctive gateway’ into the city as well as ‘transforming the area into a destination in its own right’.
The Cornhill Quarter scheme includes the £12 million refurbishment of the Corn Exchange building, which has created new homes for Cosy Club, Moss Bros., Flying Tiger Copenhagen and Thomas Cook.
Phase two of the redevelopment due for completion before Christmas 2018 and will provide 23,000 sq ft of retail space, as well as a walkway through to the recently opened 1,000 space multi-storey car park.
Lincolnshire Co-op secured planning permission for phase three of the development in late March 2018. This phase will deliver a further 30,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space, with Everyman Cinema already signed up.
A spokesperson in the application said: “Cornhill Pavements and Sincil Street form an integral part of a wider Masterplan for the Cornhill Quarter.
“It is considered that the public realm will positively support the masterplan and act as a catalyst and benchmark for future regeneration.
“The open and uncluttered nature of the new public square will provide opportunity for seasonal activity and programmable events to activate the space, creating a changeable and dynamic destination.
“There is also space for the edges of the square to be activated by revitalised buildings including the Corn Exchange.”
