Year Ahead: Claire Wakelin – “Brexit” effect has a limited impact on the demand for Lincolnshire Accountancy and Professional staff

This story is over

2019 was a really interesting and busy year for us here at Benjamin Edwards Recruitment. Our expectation of the recruitment market was pretty glum at the start of the year with the shadow of Brexit and the pending election.

It was an uncertain time for many businesses and employees.

However, the market has continued to thrive with local Lincolnshire businesses recruiting and candidates readily looking to secure their next role.

Demand is high for Part Qualified & Newly Qualified Accountants

Demand remains high for part qualified accountants in Industry and Practice. During 2019 this area of recruitment was very much candidate led. A good part qualified candidate being offered at least three job interviews and sometimes three offers.

Newly qualified ACCA/CIMA and ACCA Accountants were also in short demand in the marketplace.

Candidates with no fixed commitments to Lincolnshire were often applying for roles outside of the county for more appealing salaries.

Nottingham, Peterborough and Leicester companies could sometimes pay on average £3/4k more than a position in Lincolnshire.

Making Tax Digital fuelled boom but “Brexit” uncertainty had an effect on Senior and Executive appointments

The Practice market saw a boom in job creation first quarter due to the “Making Tax Digital” the need for bookkeepers/mid-tier staff dramatically increased to support the markets desire for these specific skills.

The mid-tier qualified Accountancy market up to circa £55/60k was also still unexpectantly buoyant in the last half of the year with the need for solid and experienced Financial Controllers to help SMEs gain financial control and robust practices for their business.

The static Executive and Senior Finance market was however affected by Brexit. With the threat of an uncertain market Finance Director and CFOs who would normally take the risk to move businesses remained in place thus slowing the market. As the expansion plans of some SMEs remained on hold due to uncertainty this also slowed Executive recruitment across the region

IT and Digital Marketing continues to be strong

The digital marketing arena around Lincolnshire has boomed this year with candidates with SEO/Web/Adwords experience were being particularly sort after.

The IT arena has also not unduly been affected by market forces with employers still recruiting regularly for IT professionals with 1st, 2nd and 3rd line support experience

Whatever business you are in whether you are trying to attract or retain staff paying a competitive salary & benefits package coupled with offering development and progression are key.

Companies that are creative in hiring, focusing on competencies and behaviours rather than insisting candidates move between “like for like” roles are winning the talent attraction competition. Some of the best candidates in the market need searching out rather than relying on traditional advertising

From conversations with business leaders and HR contacts around Lincolnshire our gut feeling is there will still be continued growth in the recruitment market for 2020 and beyond.
